about the sea

6.27.2015

Most know what a day at the beach feels like. It's quite well-known and simple to describe. The sun shines bright, the warm rays turn dark hair lighter and blonde hair blonder. The salty air, the cool water, the soft breeze, the warm sand. A refreshing blend of sensory opposites.

It is a tricky thing to write about the sea -- commonplace phrases must be cast away for more classy ones. Like sun in your eyes and sand between your toes. It's oftentimes used and quite meaningless. It's necessary to instead show that you really know what you're talking about by inserting some original vocabulary into an otherwise cliched sentence. Perhaps something along the lines of the cool water sloshing around your ankles and occasionally giving you a temporary chill as it surges up your legs. It's a complicated business to write about a day at the beach.

This is what I do know: the ocean is wild but calm. It pulls you in and scares you and fills you. Perhaps I don't know how best to best to put it...but I'm dreaming of the ocean.

  1. I've heard the "sand between your toes" phrase so many times when there is a description of the beach. I loved how you described it, though. :) (Also, your new design is incredible and the header with it's purple and pink-ness is just ugh.)

  4. Same, same. I dream of the beach. I dream of that fresh blue water just hitting my feet. I dream of the way it pulls the sand in and replaces it. Always moving, that crazy see. Always. <3 Lovely post, as usual, my dear Arushee.

  5. I think the sea is a jumble of paradoxes - it's one of those things that has a mind of its own, and perhaps that is why we are so fascinated with it. Lovely post. xx

  10. I guess you could say the same about every feeling though. Can words ever do any experience justice? I think you used them pretty well. Lovely writing x

  15. Dear Arushee,

WOW YES WOW. "A refreshing blend of sensory opposites." < mhhmm. The ocean is definitely hard to describe, isn't it? But I love it so much, I'm drawn to it like my love. I'm currently working on a bit of fiction that takes place by the ocean and gosh is it tough to think of new, creative descriptions each time! But you're so right. "the ocean is wild but calm. It pulls you in and scares you and fills you." < that is one of the best descriptions I've ever read. <3

    love,
